Assisted Living Waiver — Medi-Cal Money Toward Assisted Living (Honest Waitlist Warning)

What it is

The Assisted Living Waiver (ALW) lets Medi-Cal pay for the CARE portion of living in an approved assisted-living home (RCFE — Residential Care Facility for the Elderly) or participating senior housing, for people who would otherwise qualify for a nursing home. You (or family) still pay room and board.

Who can get it

Age 21+, full-scope Medi-Cal with zero share of cost, care needs at nursing-home level, willing to live in a participating facility in LA County (one of 15 ALW counties).

What it costs

Medi-Cal pays the care tier; room & board is yours — the program requires you to have enough for room, board, and personal needs.

The honest part

The state's own page says it plainly: slots are limited and there is a waitlist. Enrollment opens as slots release to care agencies. Plan for a wait; line up interim help (IHSS, MSSP) while you're on it.

How to start

  1. Open the state page and click "List of Care Coordination Agencies" (CCA) — call one that serves LA County; the CCA handles your application, assessment, and the waitlist.

  2. Ask the CCA for the current waitlist picture and which participating homes serve your area.

  3. Problems later? Grievance paths are on the state page, or (844) LET-US-NO.
